THE HONOURABLE FREDERICK CHANEY AO Reconciliation between Indigenous Australians and the settler society has followed a long and winding road. We have sought variously removal, dispersal, absorption, segregation, disappearance, and assimilation. For many, perhaps most, Australians the vision is of assimilation, them becoming indistinguishable from us. Yet through all the various approaches of our post settlement past the native people have endured. Australia has yet to get a clear sense of what the long term relationships might be but for schools the vision might be straightforward. A reconciled Australia would be one where the life possibilities for Aboriginal students might be the same as those for other Australian children. What would be required of schools to match that vision?
