The African Writers' Evening is the first regular evening held for African Writers outside of Africa. Started by Ghanaian writer Nii Ayikwei Parkes in consultation with the Directors of the Poetry Society, it runs at the UK's celebrated Poetry Cafe as well as the Southbank Centre, London. Its solid reputation is based on its ability to consistently identify and feature talented emerging writers. Diana Evans and Hisham Matar were both featured prior to their debut publications and several features have gone on to be shortlisted for or to win prizes such as the Caine Prize and the Commonwealth Prize. The event is held every other month from March with occasional special events, such as the June 2008 event at the Southbank Centre featuring Hisham Matar and the July 2009 Heritage Series event with Helon Habila and Cameron Duodu.
