Leigh East held onto top spot in the National Conference League with a hard fought win away at Wath Brow, which is only their second home loss in eighteen months. The game was definitely a test of character for the seventeen players involved. A few changes had to be made to the squad in the twenty four hours prior to the game due to work commitments and injury with Craig Perry and Daniel Aspden being brought into the squad and forward Simon Stevens drafted in at centre. Following a three and a half hour journey, arriving at the club forty minutes before kick off, things were made even more uncomfortable for the players when they found that the ground was a half mile walk away from the club house. This meant that the warm up pre-match was minimal. Surprisingly the playing surface was free from puddles but the soft ground and long grass meant that the game was to be more of a forward battle than the fast flowing game which East usually play. Within a couple of minutes of the start the home team took the lead from a Ryan Robb penalty. East responded on eleven minutes with a try by Gavin Hunter, converted by Danny Kilshaw. A penalty by Kilshaw on eighteen minutes gave East an eight points to two lead before the home team levelled with a try from loose forward Scott Teare, converted by Robb. East regained the lead on sixty five minutes when Simon Stevens scored in the corner. A further penalty from Kilshaw deep into stoppage time gave east a six point lead which they held onto until the final whistle. All credit to the players for facing the adversity and coming up with a valuable win, it?s hard to single out players in games such as this but Gary Middlehurst put in an outstanding defensive performance and never stopped chasing down the opposition. Next Saturday East are at home against Skirlaugh for a 2:30 kick off.
