Leigh East held on to their third place with a 40-4 win over newly promoted Widnes St Maries, who are battling for every league point to maintain their NCL Premier Division status The first half was a scrappy affair, both sides spilling possession far too easily. Easts completion rate for the half was only seven completions from twenty three sets, two of which resulted in tries. Defensively the home team are a formidable opponent, to a man they are committed in preventing the opposition gaining ground. No discredit to Marie?s, but some of the higher placed teams in the division would certainly have made East pay for their mistakes. Easts first try came on 27minutes in only their fourth set completion from sixteen, Danny Kilshaw putting a neat grubber kick through the defensive line for Toby Adamson to pounce on, Ryan Peters converting to give East a 6-0 lead. This appeared to settle East, following errors on the next two possessions they then had three set completions in succession, ending in a try for Gareth Pemberton, the back line throwing the ball left to right and Gavin Hunter cutting back inside to give a neat pass to Pemberton. Peters adding the extras to give East a 12-0 lead at the break. Tries from Carl Redford and Danny Kilshaw just after half time gave the homeside a cushion, although Maries responded with a try from second row Danny Yates on the hour, East were finally beginning to hold onto possession and take advantage. Hooker Mark Ballard forced over for a typical hookers try, man of the match Ryan Fieldhouse claimed a deserved try in the last five minutes, with Pemberton claiming his second and Easts seventh of the afternoon in the final minute of the game. Although East made a lot of errors and enterprise from set plays was almost non existent they came through with another valuable win in their push for honours this season. The main concern after the game was for Toby Adamson who had to leave the field with a serious cut to the face. We wish him a quick recovery. On a final note the club would like to thank the lads from the Royal Oak on Wigan Road, who sponsored the game and also presented their own man of the match award to Gary Middlehurst. Next Saturday East are again at home against York Acorn for a 2:30 kick off. Scorers: East: Tries: Adamson, Pemberton(2), Redford , Kilshaw, Ballard, Fieldhouse. Goals: Peters(6) Maries: Try: Yates
