Teachers Test Prep is an e-commerce website for teachers where they can buy a variety of services including live classes, private tutoring, and online programs related to teacher credentialing exam preparation. Powered by Drupal 6 with Ubercart 2, it uses Views, Panels and a lot of other standard Drupal 6 modules plus a few custom modules. Customers are able to not just to buy classes, but also to buy online packages which includes test, videos, slides, study guides, online live sessions with other tutors, and more. Did you know that PHP comes with a very powerful function called stream_select()? In short it's a wrapper for the select() system call. This allows for synchronous I/O multiplexing, or in sudo-code, a way to read multiple input/output streams without blocking; only selecting streams that are ready for I/O. In English this means that you can do parallel work from a single PHP thread without forking (forking a process is slow and complex in PHP). In this talk at the High Performance Drupal meetup at Droplabs (http://groups.drupal.org/node/223324) on May 1, 2012, Mike Carper (@mcarper) will be going over some code called the HTTP Parallel Request & Threading Library — or HTTPRL in short. Using PHP's stream_select() HTTPRL can send http requests out in parallel. These requests can be made in a blocking or non-blocking way. Blocking will wait for the http response; Non-Blocking will close the connection not waiting for the response back. Non-Blocking requests are what make this better in comparison to cURL, better control over redirects is the other reason. New LA Drupal member Chris Paul (@cpjeeves) presents on a complex web application he built that has a desktop feel. Using AJAX, CKEditor and a host of other modules, his web application has an application-like experiance for the user and a nearly seamless content creation process. By leveraging the power of ctools command style AJAX, AJAX submit handlers, and a few custom upgrades, users are able to create content, view that content in relative lists, and then even edit and refresh those lists to suit their needs. This kind of in-place create-and-edit system promotes a more intuitive creation process that doesn't break your train of thought while you rapidly input and modify your content. Time Banking is a simple concept: you work for an hour, earn an hour credit, and spend an hour with someone in your time bank community. Time banks don't get penalized in benefit reductions or pay taxes because unlike market-based national currencies, time banks are more like charitable volunteering circles of mutual aid or relationship-based gift economies. As the recession and Occupy movement encourage people to reimagine work and how they get their needs met in the new economy, time banks are really catching on. Autumn Rooney is a Los Angeles-based activist and community builder. In March, 2008, she co-founded the Echo Park Time Bank, a community collective whose purpose is to facilitate the cooperative exchange of goods and services among its hundreds of members. It's a pay-it-forward system that connects unmet needs with untapped resources. Recently, the Echo Park Time Bank migrated its time banking software to Community Weaver, a hosted Drupal platform provided by Time Banks USA, a non-profit that is dedicated to promoting and supporting time banking around the world. On November 14, 2011, the public radio program Marketplace from American Public Media — heard by more than 10 million people around the country each week — launched a new website at http://www.marketplace.org built on top of our new Drupal 7 content management system. Tuning Drupal performance is challenging to say the least. In the past, it has required detailed knowledge of your database engine, trips through the slow query log, caching layers such as Memcache, configuration settings in your http server of choice, PHP and xhprof profiling, front-end caching, and more. This has all become significantly easier in the age of NewRelic, a hosted application performance monitoring tool that has been optimized for Drupal. Context and Features are two of my favorite modules. Context is really helpful for defining the structure of your site. I’ll show you how to divide your site into sections, assign blocks to those sections, create section based body classes and lots of other cool tricks. I’ll also explain how stacking contexts works with more complex sites. Features can serve several purposes. I like to use it to export certain objects from the database to a structured array in a file that can then be versioned. This practice greatly simplifies the process of migrating changes from one server to another. next we’ll go over how to take your features to the next level by adding just about anything to the features module file. Lastly, we’ll go over the kit specification, which describes how to avoid conflicts when working with features. One of the big features that separates Drupal from other CMSs and frameworks is its rich set of APIs for building custom modules. It’s even reasonably well documented. Indeed, it is essentially baked into Drupal’s DNA that you will need to write some code to reach the goals of the website you’re building. That said, it can be intimidating to get started writing code. This talk is aimed primarily at designers, themers, site builders, whatever you want to call yourself if writing code is not your strong suit. A little bit of experience with or exposure to programming or scripting (this includes Javascript) is helpful, but not required. We will step through some relatively easy ways to make modifications to a stock Drupal site using the core API, writing a basic module from scratch. Join stevenator, chellman, and BTMash for some good old node theming fun as we delve into the pros and cons of the wonderful Display Suite package of modules. This one hour session will be a precursor to the session “Advanced Display Suite – case study of workflow using Features and Git”. Sites can be victims to their own success when increased popularity causes it to be slow, or unable to handle more page views. Sites can also be victims when users are not careful with what is going on behind the scenes after users log in. Based on the presentation from last year and amount of available material, I am splitting the sessions on Drupal Performance and Scalability into 2 separate sessions and we will cover, over the course of one hour, strategies, tips, and tricks to boost the front end performance of your site. Here are some things that we will touch on and discuss: What are the symptoms to look for? What are the areas you investigate for problems? What tools are available to help you diagnose issues? What are some hints and tips for making your site faster? While I will come prepared with slides on tips and tricks I have learned over my years of experience, this will be a Bird of a Feather (BOF) format, so everyone can share their experiences. Sites can be victims to their own success when increased popularity causes it to be slow, or unable to handle more page views. Sites can also be victims when users are not careful with what is going on behind the scenes after users log in. Based on the presentation from last year and amount of available material, I am splitting the sessions on Drupal Performance and Scalability into 2 separate sessions and we will cover, over the course of one hour, strategies, tips, and tricks to boost the back end performance of your site (we will be touching on server, fine-tuning Apache, PHP, MySQL, optimizing PHP code, what to avoid). Along with theming Views, understanding jQuery, and a handful of other techniques, this is one of the more important skills a Drupal themer/developer can have. Sadly, a lot of people don’t even know this exists. Field Formatters are Drupal Field API’s (and CCK for D6) method of outputting data. Formatters are swappable, configurable, exportable, and most important, reusable. We’ll go over all of Field API’s hooks that pertain to formatters, I’ll demonstrate how to build a simple formatter from beginning to end, then we’ll walk-through some demonstration code and see some practical and advanced use-cases in action. If you don’t know PHP yet then this topic might be a little daunting. Although, even as site builders it’s a good idea to understand how these things work under the hood. Often we store information in our nodes (or whatever entity) in terms of groups of data (for example, a street address, city, state, and postal code), however, the most commonly used strategy has been to create individual fields and “glue” them all together to make them appear as they are coherent. This is simply wrong! There is a huge difference between grouping a series of textfields together and calling it a “thing”, and using say, the address field module. With simply configuring individual fields together, there is a cost of performance, complexity, and an overhead of maintaining a lot of custom code (both in the back and front-end.) Drupal commerce is a new Drupal based E-commerce solution from the Commerce Guys, the same people that brought you Ubercart. It’s built on D7 and uses extensive views integration, which makes it so much more easily configurable than it’s predecessor ever was. It also uses product entities, which can be a little jarring to an Ubercart convert to realize that products aren’t actually nodes. We tend to focus on the the people visiting our websites, but the people who manage the websites we build are users too and all too often their experience is overlooked. A CMS is a tool, and tools which offer a poor user experience are unlikely to be used, or worse yet, they’ll be used incorrectly. As designers, themers and site builders, it is our job to craft a user experience for our clients that will make managing their site a pleasant, intuitive process. ABOUT THIS SESSION I will present two case studies of Drupal sites currently in progress. The first is for Manning, Leaver, Bruder & Berberich—a small law firm in Los Angeles. The second is for the California Science Center—the largest hands-on science museum on the west coast. These sites represent very different types of users with very different requirements, giving us a nice range of issues to look at. In both cases, I will concentrate on how authenticated users interact with the site to manage its content. Note that both of these sites are being built in Drupal 6, but the concepts I’m discussing are still relevant in Drupal 7 and beyond. Some of the issues I’ll discuss include: How to support the needs of your users, and only the needs of your users. The evil’s of the Drupal interface and why you should hide them. Building your own admin tools using common everyday items. Publication workflows and the dangers of editing a live website. Luddite users and the limitations of training. It is my hope that this session can transition into a Birds of a Feather discussion of user experience issues surrounding website administration. So please bring your own examples to share and questions we can discuss as a community.
