Harley Shaiken, a UCB Labor Economist who focuses on the auto industry spoke at a California AFL-CIO Economics conference on 12/2/2009 in Sacramento. Shaiken calls on the US government which owns the controlling interest of General Motors to take over the NUMMI Toyota UAW plant that is proposed to be closed. His call for a government industrial policy with direct investment instead of relying only on the private industry is a challenge to Obama's economic plan which is also supported by AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka. It also challenges the support for the labor-management partnership by the UAW with Toyota and other companies.
