Video journal of a poet, podcaster, and photographer who, with his wife and Yorkie, divides his time between downtown Denver and Cambridge, Mass., with frequent travel elsewhere. I am the host of The Kindle Chronicles Podcast and The Reading Edge podcast.
Dr. Temple Grandin, author of The Way I See It and Animals Make Us Human, reviews several Kindle models and an iPad and finds the devices may benefit people on the autism spectrum with reading problems. She stresses that reading problems are highly variable, but in some cases the e-readers and tablet will work well. Of particular interest to Temple was the Kindle's text to speech feature, and the ease of seeing what you type on the iPad. I recorded this video while interviewing Temple for the ...
The 2012 Ford Focus that we ordered from Big Mike Naughton Ford arrived in Denver by train from the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, on April 22, 2012. Thanks to the hospitality of Union Pacific management and crew, I was able to see our car roll down the ramp from the rail car, and then I had another surprise. I will be sharing what I learn about the innovative MyFord Touch technology in the Focus each Wednesday on my Edge of the Road audio podcast, all about the gadget on wheels f...
This is the side-by-side video of my interview on November 22, 2010, with Drew Shikoh, 14, an avid reader and Kindle enthusiast from Chattanooga, Tennesee.
At the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Botswana yesterday, we made the acquaintance of two orphaned cheetahs, now 14 years old and tame enough to put up with careful patting behind the ears by tourists. Our expert guide, Lincoln Njiru, introduced us to Duma and Letotse, and he taught us how to make them purr.
Len Edgerly, host of The Reading Edge and Kindle Chronicles podcasts, takes the new Sony Reader PRS-350 for a test drive, comparing it with the previous Pocket Edition and the Kindle 3. [One thing I forgot to mention in the video: turning the pages on the PRS-350 is effortless and very cool - a slight flick of the finger accomplishes the page turn, because of the excellent new touch screen.]
Len Edgerly, host of the Kindle Chronicles podcast, compares the speed of 3G v. WiFi on a pair of Kindle 3s set up with identical configuration except for the wireless connection. Both are set to enable Java and Images, and cookies and history were cleared before the test. WiFi at the cottage in Ocean Park, Maine, where the video was filmed is averaging 9 Mb/second download and .22 Mb/second upload.
n this fireside chat on a stormy day at Ocean Park, I compared the WebKit browser in the new Kindle 3 with the browser in the Kindle 2. I looked at the speed with which they both arrived at a web page, and I considered the differing views of the web page by each. Also looked at the new Kindle's Article Mode in operation, but so far I have not been impressed with it. I may be doing something wrong, or there may be updates coming. Filmed in Ocean Park, Maine, on August 25, 2010.
Len Edgerly, host of The Kindle Chronicles podcast, prepared this review after using a new Kindle Free 3G +WiFi for three days. Using the Kindle 2 for comparison, he discusses the size and weight of the Kindle 3, as well as speed, screen clarity, WiFi, PDF capability, accessibility, and the missing numbers row on the keyboard. He plans to donate his Amazon review Kindle to EBooksForTroops.org as part of a new project to donate used Kindle 2's to U.S. soldiers on active duty in Afghanistan. The...
I purchased four e-book copies of Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel--one each for Sony Reader, Kobo, nook, and Kindle--in order to compare the reading experience for the same book on four leading e-readers. After eliminating the devices that do not offer dictionary, notes, and highlights, the tournament ends with a nook v. Kindle battle through five tests. You'll learn which device was the victor, as well as many details about the reading experience on competing e-readers. Recorded in Cambridge, Mass...
I picked up my new Aluratek Libre e-reader at the South Portland, Maine, Borders Store on July 22, 2010. Here is the unboxing and a quick comparison of the reflective LCD screen with an E Ink screen.
