THE DANISH PAVILION (2010) The theme of the Expo 2010 was Better Cities Better Life and in this context BIG architects designed an expressive pavilion that showed the main qualities of Copenhagen by having real city bikes, a harbor pool and the Little Mermaid integrated in the exhibition. FACADE The Danish Pavilion was designed as a looping spiral, creating an elongated and varied exhibition that could be experienced as a pedestrian or on a Copenhagen city bike. The expressive form has over 300 meters of facade with more than 3,500 wholes. Each having opaque acrylic tubes installed connecting the inside and the outside. The tubes vary in size and makes it possible to look inside and out of the building and creates a natural ventilation. But the tubes also have another function. Each hole is equipped with a powerful full-color LED light source that can illuminate the tube and hereby the building. SENSORS The light sources in the tubes are controlled by 16 sensors - 8 which measures the current temperature in and around the facade, and 8 which measures the light. The sensors are installed and distributed on the façade giving a total picture of temperature and light conditions around the pavilion. The data from the sensors was interpreted by a specially created software that controlled and ran the light designs throughout the pavilion. Information from the light sensors controlled when and what visual effects to activate and the temperature affected the color temperature of the light design. CONCEPT One of the main concepts of the light designs has been to keep a natural and consistent look of the pavilion. This shows especially in the nightfall when the light is in the pavilion is slowly turned on. Whereas the holes in the facade appear as black windows during the day, they are lit in the evening and create a new layer of communication to the pavilion. The 627 pixels in length and nine in height are used for different effects, patterns and information that varies in intensity and speed. Light designs that surprises, entertains and informs, from subtle and understated experiences to more powerful and spectacular ones. He identifies with the gentrifying artists who’ve flocked to the area in the last decade and the Hispanic locals with whom he grew up when Bushwick was better known for its crime rate than its hot new galleries. In support of Beijing Design Week late last year, Converse presented “Off Canvas” a street-level exhibition of typography design that canvassed the capital city in obscure places that mark China’s thriving creative subcultures. Neville Brody With over one hundred years behind the brand, the exhibition celebrated two things vital to Converse’s heritage of storytelling– words and type. “Off Canvas” showcased the work of international and local artists notorious for their artistry of words. Culling from the diverse worlds of graphic design, art, and graffiti, the installations revealed communities and canvases where China’s emerging scenes in indie music, art, fashion and skate are based. The work of artists Benny Luk (Hong Kong), Ying Yonghui (Shanghai), Nod Young (Beijing), Neville Brody (London), Ben Eine (London) and Niels Shoe Meulman (Amsterdam) compose a map that includes the quaint Wudaoying Hutong to the packed streets of Xidan to the art district of 798/D-Park to the façade of the live music venue Mao Livehouse. Brody is known to many for his cutting edge digital typography and graphic design that helped define the lasting pop culture aesthetic that he still redefines today. As the general public has learned from that time in the 80′s the choice and usage of typography contains many hidden messages. Brody once said, “Typography is a hidden tool of manipulation within society.” Neville Brody studied graphic design at the London College of Printing from 1977 until 1980. In the early 1980s Neville Brody became art director at Fetish Records. Belonging to the fringe music scene, Neville Brody experimented with new typefaces, informed by ideas drawn from the subculture. Neville Brody mixed fonts, ignored typeface sizes and standard distances between lines, interspersing fonts with decorative elements. From 1981 until 1986 Neville Brody was art director at “The Face” magazine, for which he designed a distinctive typography that inspired magazine producers and designers worldwide. Helen Dennis Projected Drawings July 8th-September 2nd 2011 video by twitter.com/​johnbirdsong Helen's work is rooted in the built world of the urban environment. She uses architecture to develop her layered drawings, which are entwined into the photographic process and directly used as negatives to create photographic drawings. Using the space at The LAB Gallery, Helen will push the concept of her process further. Through manipulation of the space, she will project the outside environment directly into the exhibition space, turning it into a camera obscura. From within, her drawings will unfold to engulf the space and thus, magnify the nuances of urban life. The passage of time and movement on the streets outside will be depicted as Helen's drawings grow over the duration of the project. Helen Dennis was born in the UK and now resides in Brooklyn, NY. She studied her BA (Honors) at the University of the Creative Arts in Canterbury and achieved her MFA at Hunter College in 2005. Dennis has been awarded a fellowship from Aljira Center for Contemporary Art as well as a photographic fellowship from The International House, NYC. Dennis has attended art residencies in Beijing, Cyprus and most recently Iceland. She has participated in various exhibitions worldwide and in the US with the support of Queens Council of the Arts, Kent County Council, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, South East Arts UK and the National Lottery Arts Fund for the UK. In case you're not hip to The Decemberists , they're a fantastic indie/folk/rock outfit from Portland, Oregon who took 15 years to become an overnight success. Their influences are diverse, from 1960s British folksters like Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs to 1980s modern rock songwriters like XTC, REM, and Morrissey. In January, the band released its sixth album, an epic alt.country/bluesy work titled The King Is Dead and took to the road. When their wagon train came through Oakland's Fox Theater in February, Boing Boing pal and hypertalented video director Scott Compton made the scene. BB readers may remember Scott for directing the Swell Season interview/performance film in 2009 that quickly became a Boing Boing Video fave. The Decemberists' timing was impeccable as it was Valentine's Day--and Scott, well, loves The Decemberists. Scott rallied his crack video team: the inimitable Bart Nagel and Chris Valente on Canon 5D cameras and Lauretta Molitor on sound -- for 20 minutes with the band and stageside access for a couple tunes. Then he took the footage back to his Remedy Editorial facility where editor Jeffrey Boyette and colorist Ayumi Ashley worked their post-production magic. The video team's passion and the band's talent gelled into the lovely piece you see above. "In person, The Decemberists were humble, smart, and collaborative," Scott says. "For me, it was really interesting to hear singer/songwriter Colin Meloy talk about how Neil Young's seminal 'Comes A Time' album was a big influence. I discovered that album my freshman year of college, and missed a lot of classes sitting in my dorm listening to it again and again." Studio Cesarine produces moving images that aren't what some people might typically associate with the concept of video art, the reality being that there is no real way of describing the genre in terms of technique or the meaning of combining fine art with video interaction. Based in NYC, Indira Cesarine is experimenting with puts models into a painting in progress - artist, model and video combine for spectacular results. Louis Harding spent years trying to open an African-American community center in New Orleans. In 2005, he was finally able to offer his first summer program, then Hurricane Katrina struck and the center was destroyed. Despite the setback, 72-year-old Harding refuses to give up on his mission to combat poverty in New Orleans. While sorting through the debris of his life, Louis discusses the importance of history, heroes, and self-esteem in the Black community. Shot, produced and directed by Mike Kobal, mikekobal.com. This new independent filmmaker is also a photographer shooting with a Canon 5D MarkII, which just so happens to shoot video. Shot with a number of Canon EOS Lenses ( http://vimeo.com/10317452 ) this film is also an entry into a Canon video contest. Amazingly enough, there is no noise reduction applied here.. Mike was shooting at ISO levels of 2000 to 3400 in some of the dark scenes and thanks in part to the evolution of digital camera sensor technology these dark scenes are breathtaking.Mike collaborated online with musicians for the sound track, and while the focus seems to be on the technical wizardry, perhaps because it's a contest entry. The script and the plot is based on the mystery genre, but only has time to be an intriguing vignette. Director Kobal has worked with the Canon to produce a number of works that have received accolades, including from the Independent Media Channel. SAN FRANCISCO - October 28th/SF Bay Area Independent Media Center More than two dozen protesters blocked the entrances to the San Francisco office of Blue Shield of California early in the morning of October 28. They were joined by close to 200 other single payer system health care advocates, who festooned the building with crime tape and chanted loudly. The demonstrators charged Blue Shield with crimes including murder, breach of contract, and subversion of democracy. Participants in the protest represented a range of local organizations including Health Care for All-California, Vote Health, Code Pink, AFSCME Council 57, Single Payer Now, Pride at Work, LAGAI-Queer Insurrection, Labor for Single Payer, Wellstone Democratic Club, Direct Action to Stop the War, California Physicians Alliance, Gray Panthers, and more. Protesters charged the health insurance industry with crimes including: Murder: A new Harvard study found that 45,000 Americans a year die because they don?t have health insurance. For the insured, denial of care and delays in approving care cause an uncounted number of deaths (see ?Patient stories? sheet in this packet). Causing sickness and suffering for millions of people with treatable health conditions who can?t get the care they need because claims are denied, policies canceled, or deductibles and co-payments set so high that patients can?t afford to seek treatment. Breach of contract: Insurance companies routinely cancel the policies of many thousands of people after they became sick. A report released in June by House Committee on Energy and Commerce showed that Blue Cross ? evaluations included reports of how many policyholders they dropped and how many millions worth of medical care they saved the company. ?The committee investigation uncovered several rescission practices that one lawmaker called egregious, including targeting every policyholder diagnosed with leukemia, breast cancer and 1,400 other serious illnesses,? wrote Lisa Girion in the June 17 edition of the L.A. Setting pixels free, and blurring the boundary between street lighting and digital displays. Urban Pixels is a concept where public space lighting can be programmed in all kinds of ways. For example, instead of having the typical urban skyline illuminated by a static set of office building lights, the lighting display could be programmed so that it could be dynamic and active.
