If Trayvon Martin was innocently going about his business when he was accosted by Zimmerman, a man twice his size -- if Zimmerman wrongly treated him like a criminal for whatever reason -- and if both men stood their ground -- shouldn’t the NRA’s argument be that the wrong person got shot? That if Trayvon had a gun he could have saved his own life. That every 17-year old black kid should carry a gun. Indeed, everyone should carry a gun, as long as they’re responsible and know they’re right.

So that our country takes another ratchet click to the left in 2012 -- setting us up for another ratchet click to the right in 2014. What if that is the best we can hope for?
