Since its development in the 1980s, the system for rice intensification or SRI has been helping small holder farmers to greatly increase their yields and lift themselves out of poverty. This video shows how knowledge of the method is moving from Madagascar to Burundi via Rwanda through a network of IFAD supported farmer groups. And SRI is catching on. IFAD and ILO have reviewed different programmes related to rural youth, to develop elements of a framework of intervention for promoting decent and productive work for youth living in rural areas. This workshop presents the findings of this joint review, with emphasis on examples in Egypt, Madagascar, Nepal, Nicaragua and Senegal. IFAD and ILO recognize the need to increase decent and productive employment opportunities for youth in rural areas. Over 85% of the 1.2 billion young women and men are in developing countries and live mainly in rural areas. Una iniciativa migratoria del gobierno japonés le permite a cada familia acceder a 30 hectáreas y el gobierno argentino, a través de PRODERNEA, apoya al grupo con crédito y asistencia técnica. La Cooperativa La Enramada de Corpus, Ltda. comienza a gestarse en el año 2000 entre dos de sus actuales integrantes. En la zona de Laguna Blanca se desarrolla la primera experiencia de arreo, encierro, esquila y liberación de vicuñas silvestres para su explotación sustentable luego del levantamiento de la veda que evitó su extinción. Esta forma de manejo de las vicuñas se basa en tradiciones ancestrales y se caracteriza por el encierro pausado de las vicuñas, lo que tiende a reducir la intranquilidad de los animales y busca un adecuado equilibrio con su entorno natural. Una comunidad de artesanas Wichi. Tejer es una labor ancestral que se recrea en la organización de la comunidad para contribuir al desarrollo sustentable. Las artesanas Wichi de Bermejo y Ramón Lista se organizan y así logran mejorar la calidad y la comercialización de sus productos. ProyectArte se asienta en una red de asociaciones de mujeres tejedoras que conecta a 560 artesanas dedicadas a la producción de artesanías en chaguar (fibra vegetal) y en lana de oveja. El FIDA financia tres proyectos que actualmente se encuentran en curso en el país: el Proyecto de Desarrollo Rural de las Provincias del Noroeste (PRODERNOA), el Proyecto de Desarrollo Rural de la Patagonia (PRODERPA) y el Programa de Desarrollo de Áreas Rurales (PRODEAR). En Venezuela, el FIDA está apoyando la segunda fase del Proyecto de Desarrollo Rural Sostenible para las Zonas Semiáridas de los Estados de Falcón y Lara (PROSALAFA II) desde 2002. El proyecto trabaja en las zonas semi-áridas de Lara y Falcón, donde viven algunas de las comunidades más pobres del país, reforzando la capacidad de las organizaciones rurales, y apoyando la conservación de los recursos naturales, especialmente suelo y agua, usando la micro-cuenca como unidad de planificación y acción. FIDA ha propuesto ampliar esta colaboración para incluir a nuevos socios y afrontar mejor los retos ambientales y climáticos del país. En coordinación con el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (GEF), FIDA y el Ministerio del Ambiente de Venezuela (MPPA) están preparando un proyecto innovador que promoverá la reforestación de cuencas degradadas del semi-árido, mejorando la gestión de los recursos naturales (agua, suelos, bosques). Con la promoción de procesos competitivos que inyectan fondos directamente a las manos de los pequeños empresarios y empresarias, el programa Oportunidades Rurales de Colombia (conocido como el Rural Microenterprise Assets Programme en inglés) está financiando innovación, paz y desarrollo sostenible en los campos colombianos, concurso por concurso, y campesino por campesino. A través de los concursos públicos – en los que microempresarios con experiencia forman parte del jurado y otorgan financiamiento a los participantes del proyecto – cerca de US$6 millones han sido transferidos directamente a las cuentas bancarias de pequeños y pequeñas empresarias. Con la promoción de procesos competitivos que inyectan fondos directamente a las manos de los pequeños empresarios y empresarias, el programa Oportunidades Rurales de Colombia (conocido como el Rural Microenterprise Assets Programme en inglés) está financiando innovación, paz y desarrollo sostenible en los campos colombianos, concurso por concurso, y campesino por campesino. Al enfocarse en las comunidades tradicionalmente marginadas como los pueblos indígenas, jóvenes, afro-colombianos y las personas desplazadas por la violencia, el programa Oportunidades tiene como objetivo financiar la asistencia técnica a través de concursos. Adriane del Torto, IFAD's EUFF coordinator in West Africa, opens the capitalization workshop in Abidjan. From 21 to 26 March, partners and staff of the IFAD EU Food Facility project in West Africa are meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to review the results that have been achieved over the last 18 months, share experiences and draw lessons learned for future projects. Since the end of 2010, IFAD with funding by the European Union’s Food Facility, has been implementing a broad programme, building on existing IFAD projects, to increase the availability of improved seed varieties for smallholder farmers in West Africa. Collaborating with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), IFAD supported more than 200 000 rural families to increase their agricultural production and grow enough food for themselves and their communities. Proyecto de Manejo de Recursos Naturales en el Chaco y Valles Altos de Bolivia (PROMARENA). PROMARENA cerró este año después de contribuir a mejorar la calidad de vida de 19,985 familias pobres rurales. Los resultados del PROMARENA superaron las metas esperadas. El número de familias beneficiarias del proyecto fue superado por más de 130 por ciento, llegándose a trabajar directamente con 1269 comunidades rurales en 53 municipalidades en los departamentos de Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Santa Cruz y Tarija. En este video del Proyecto Uruguay Rural (PUR), campesinos del Departamento de San José comparten sus historias. En el año 2005 por iniciativa del PUR en conjunto con agrupaciones hortícolas y queseras se comienza acciones en torno a los pescadores de ese departamento. En una zona del proyecto, existían solo tres embarcaciones con matricula y ninguna con permiso de pesca. Hoy la situación sea la siguiente: 46 embarcaciones con matricula, 40 permisos de pesca vigentes, 40 certificados navegabilidad, 40 embarcaciones trabajando con curso aprobado de pesca artesanal. At 10.00 a.m. on 23 February 2012 Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, took centre stage to share his perspectives, with questions to follow from international broadcaster, Isha Sesay. Mr Gates discussed the importance of agriculture and how sustainable productivity improvements can reduce poverty in developing countries. He challenged both global players and national governments to adopt a new approach to supporting smallholder farmers. In the developing world, the foundation works to improve people’s health and give them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. Its agricultural development work focuses on helping small farmers produce more, while protecting the environment, so they can build self-sufficiency. In addition to Mr Gates’ role at the foundation, he is co-founder and chairman of Microsoft Corporation.
