The Gay Activist Alliance decided to occupy NYC's Marriage License Bureau, June 4,1971, after the City Clerk threatened to arrest the minister of a local gay church for performing "Services of Holy Union" which the City Clerk said were the equivalent of gay marriage. Gay marriage was not yet one of the LGBT movement's goal in 1971 but the activists felt they couldn't stand by while a city official threatened the Church of the Beloved Disciple with legal action. The current "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy is a living nightmare for gays serving in the military. The protest is also a memorial service for a legendary gay American military Hero, Leonard Matlovich. "I've been in the service twelve years, and I'm gay. I have never been in trouble. I have a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and three commendations for performance above & beyond the call of duty. On the Air Force's rating scale of 1 to a top of 9, I have never received less than 9 in my entire enlistment. Now, I want to end the military's prejudice against homosexuality, and I'm willing to fight all the way to the Supreme Court if it's necessary!" He told Dr. Frank Kameny upon agreeing to be the "ideal" test case Kameny & other civil rights activists were seeking. Julia Nixon gave this remarkable performance of her "own song" on the Southwest Airlines Stage (a small little-noticed stage in the middle of the Gay Pride Festival) at the Capital Gay Pride Festival which filled the avenue leading to the Capitol building itself in Washington, D.C. Sometimes the victim of a crime ends up being the one sent to jail. That's especially true when dealing with gangs, drugs & the "honor codes" of the street. Likewise, inmates have their own "laws of the jungle". This video captures the way "justice" is handled by the law, street gangs & inmates themselves. Michael, the person who tells this story has stayed off drugs for years with methadone & has recently successfully quit methadone (with huge difficulty). He is in love with a woman whom he dreams of marrying and having a family with. She has motivated him to build a better life for the two of them together. Life is not easy for some people. I really got turned off to local Hoboken politics years ago. I almost didn't vote for the first time in 33 years this time because I really didn't know the candidates or issues that well. Coming out of the Path Underground Train Station, I noticed some pretty young white girls looking awfully bored as they held signs & passed out literature. They looked more like H.S. cheerleaders than political activists. Elsewhere I saw others, both young & old, excitedly promoting their candidates. On impulse, I ran home, grabbed the camera & went out to ask some leafleters why they were involved. The bored cheer leaders had gone home but there were a variety of other people to interview. I want to thank each & every person in this video for simply being who they were--including the man who threatened to sue me. There will probably be a run off. Shaking ass and smiling, an amazing band named "UZUHI" performed at the Japan Society Festival on the campus of Columbia University in New York City. They are one of the exciting Japanese bands (JROCK) who sing many of their songs in English and are part of the vibrant underground musical avant garde scene stretching out from NYC to increasingly large sections of the nation. This is a serious video in which I explain why I feel so alienated from most people my own age. It happened to be part of a talk I gave to a group of gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender youth in a church in Jersey City, NJ on 3/12/09. I hope it will provoke a serious discussion about being transaged---AND what it is that causes most "truly old" people to become so isolated & miserable. Temporarily, I've avoided that.
