The Help is in theaters. Sing Hallelujah. Based on the best selling book by the same name, The Help is sweeping up at the box office. Emma Stone stars as "Skeeter," a recent college graduate more interested in becoming a writer than a wife. She's a bit of an odd duck in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi, but still clings to her childhood friends who now make up the social elite of the city. She gets a job with the local newspaper writing a housekeeping column. As she's never had to lift a finger herself, she gets the advice from Aibelene, a maid, who knows all there is to know about keeping house and taking care of children. It's when the New York editor she's asked for work tells her to work on something more controversial that she decides to write about what it's like to work as a maid in a Mississippi matron's home. She enlists Aibilene (Viola Davis) in this endeavor, and is soon joined by Minny (Octavia Spencer). Both of the maids are putting their lives on the line by participating in the project, but the want to have their say, especially if they can exact a little revenge on the diabolical Hilly Holbrooke, played beautifully by Bryce Dallas Howard. The Help is like a breath of fresh air on a long, hot summer afternoon. Let's hope more movies such as this are already in production to rescue us from the a steady diet of action, gore, raunch and explosions.
