Robert Redford is making history interesting. The director's latest project is "The Conspirator," a historic drama starring James McAvoy and Robin Wright. The setting is the end of the bloody and brutal American Civil War. Peace is at hand and then the unthinkable happens. President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theater by actor John Wilkes Booth. What happens next isn't really known by the rest of the world and this is where the story begins. Among those accused in the murder plot is a woman, Mary Surrat, played by Robin Wright. Surrat's son, John, is believed to be part of the conspiracy plot, but he has not been captured, so Mary, a Southerner and a Catholic, is charged. Instead of a civilian court, a military tribunal is quickly called to deliver swift justice, truth be damned. The Conspirator is a timely piece for the post 9/11 world in which we live and at a time when the US is still dealing with the repercussions of that brutal attack. Redford says he likes to explore unknown stories and here he succeeds quite handily. He gathered a top notch cast, including Tom Wilkinson, Kevin Kline, Danny Huston, Evan Rachel Wood and Alexis Bledel. Your kids, husband, best-friend might say, "I don't want to learn anything about history," but you'll be glad you dragged them with you. The Conspirator is rated PG-13.
