While a little deep to do long penetration dives on, this day we couldn't resist to take the long way into the engine room. Once inside and as far back as you can possibly go a nice surprise awaited us. What was it you say? Watch the video and you will see. The second thing we couldn't resist was to show the whole penetration dive without cuts, this made the video a little long but for those who don't do this type of dives it gives you an oppertunity to see what we who do see.In September 1987, the Broward County Artificial Reef Program sank the 240-foot Dutch freighter Poinciana, built in 1961 on her port side in 110 feet of water. The name was changed to Jim Atria, after Jim Atria who is a Broward County developer, diver and sport fisherman. Atria played a major role in having the ship sunk, his way of thanking the community that had been so good to him over the years. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew moved the ship more than 1/4 mile offshore and sitting upright to a depth of 132 feet. One of her two masts are now broken off and one is intact, rise to 70 feet, the highest point of the wreck and are covered by various corals and sea fans, providing great photo opportunities when ascending from the main deck. Other beautiful spots for memorable shots are the corner of the main deck as it meets the wheelhouse on the starboard side which, in itself is covered with staggering growth, and several open hatches adorned with tremendous growth. Wreck divers are invited to explore the inside of several openings at the wheelhouse at 95 feet. For the naturalist, Black Groupers, and Hogfish can be found under the hull at the sand, Glassy Sweepers and Squirrelfish in the cargo hold, thousands of Snappers and Grunts hiding in nooks, schools of Barracuda hovering as you descend and Amberjacks speeding through thousands of swimming baitfish above. This was a beautiful day to accompanying a new diver on her SCUBA certification checkout dives. It was a little rough on the surface but once below it could not be better. Separated Rocks is known for having some of the best diving around here but this day it surpassed any expectations. Turtles, Green Morays, sharks and of course all types of reef fish. While we see turtles quite often when we dive, seeing one dining at 140 ft on one of the areas best wrecks is a rare treat. The turtle did not seem to mind that I came rather close and put my 100W video light in its face. In fact as you can see in the end it just swims straight at me and I have to scramble to get out of the way and still it hit the camera while swimming by.The Hydro Atlantic wreck is one of the few real wrecks in the area. It sunk in 1987 while being towed to Texas for scrapping. It sits in 175 ft of water about a mile of the coast. Dive Florida Gold Coast is a film of SCUBA diving the costal area from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach. The reef and its creatures are filmed on the third reef which run almost continuously along the coast at a depth of 50-60 feet. The Guy Harvey was a 185-foot Haitian freighter originally christened the M/V Lady Kimberly. The ship was built in Holland in 1957, where she spent her last years carrying island cargo to and from Haiti. In 1997, with financial help from renowned marine artist Guy Harvey, the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo towed the vessel from Port au Prince to Ft. Lauderdale. Guy Harvey painted sharks and other game fish along the outside of the ship before she was sunk May 10, 1997 in 140 feet of water to form an artificial reef. The wreck is located 3.5 miles south of the Hillsboro Inlet. Her top deck is 110 feet below the surface. This dive is meant for advanced divers only. Separated Rocks is a patch reef of the second reef outside Deerfield Beach. The depth is less than 40 ft and one of the prettiest reefs in the area. A number of patches are lined up in a north - south line, sometimes you see from on to the other and sometimes you don't. When you can't see the next patch you have to rely on your faith in your compass and swim from the most Northern point of one patch straight North and you'll find the next patch (or vice versa if the current is going South). By coincident one day we ran across this group of rebreather divers underwater. One class of 4 and a fellow underwater camera man, a total of 6 rebreather divers. This is the "new" way to dive, no bubbles, no big tanks, however they are complicated equipment and quite pricey. The United Caribbean wreck was sunk intentionally as an artificial reef. For years she was laying intact on the bottom as a complete small freighter, a very cool dive to begin explore wreck diving at. The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons first broke her apart and then finally moved the stern section away from the bow and broken up mid section. For a while she was dangerous to dive since while the bow and stern section was sitting up right they where not stable. 'Baby' is the resident Green Moray eel at the UNited Caribbean and Sea Emperor dive sites. She usually sits in a hole and display her crooked nose. On this particular day she left and went for a swim and we went with her. After a while she thinks we are getting to close for comfort and tells us so.
