This is a special report about the way Google is taking our cultural heritage and locking it away behind proprietary data formats. Google has a contract with NARA, the National Archives and Records Administration, to distribute its films and videos that are in the public domain. Google is digitizing these materials in a proprietary format. We present a method to capture the public domain video hosted on Google video and take back your cultural heritage, effectively getting around the roadblocks Google has tried to erect between you and your public domain history. Remember that it’s axiomatic that public domain material can never be copyrighted by anyone, therefore, once you use the methods presented in this report to derive the raw video data, it’s yours to use as you wish. You should only use these methods to capture public domain content or material for which you have been granted a license.
