Dartmouth is Halifax's twin city. Located across Halifax Harbour, it was founded in 1750 (one year later than Halifax's founding). The ship, "Alderney" carried 150 people for the new setttlement. Dartmouth was incorporated as a town in 1873. Both Dartmouth and Halifax thrived as separate communities throughout the years. Two bridges link between Halifax and Dartmouth (Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and A. Murray Mackay Bridge). In 1996, the communities including Dartmouth, Halifax, and Bedford amalgamated into the Halifax Regional Municipality (H.R.M.).
