What difference would EFCA make? Employees at the Smithfield pork processing plant in North Carolina have battled for more than a decade to form a union. They've confronted threats from their employer and various layers of intimidation. Last December, however, they were successful in forming a union in one of the least union friendly states. Gene Bruskin, a former strategist for the United Food and Commercial Workers Smithfield campaign, says that the 16-year battle for union recognition at the North Carolina meat packing plant would have happened a lot sooner if workers not employers had been in charge.
