Inspired by Alvin and Mary Lucier's 1969 experiment with audiotape, I put two video cameras in front of me - one digital, one hi8 analog - and copied the same brief recording over and over again, then cut them in visual sync, side by side, to compare image deterioration in digital and analog. I wanted to trap the distortions of re-recording analog video, something that I know has very nearly vanished from our midst. But what I hadn't expected was the metaphor: the analog deterioration seemingly recreates the aging process itself, while the digital recording mocks it.to see more multi-image & split screen experiments, please copy and paste this URL: http://www.glimpseculture.com or just google my name: Julie Talen.
