How to Make Compost Tea by Patti Moreno, the Garden Girl Compost tea is not meant for your cup. And don’t try to mix in a spoonful of honey. It enables you to make a little compost go a long way. To “brew,” take two cups of compost and wrap it in burlap. Secure the goods with a rubber band and soak your tea bag in a 5 gallon bucket of water. You can oxygenate the water by pumping air into it or simply circulating it by pushing around the burlaped mass. After 24 hours – and don’t soak it any longer – the beneficial bacteria created through compost will start multiplying. Use that “tea” right away to water your plants and you’ll have infused even the most tired soil with a shot of powerful fertilizer. Patti Moreno is host of GardenGirlTV.com, where you’ll find ideas, inspiration, and information about urban sustainable living. She lives with her husband, daughter, dog, rabbits, cats, and chickens in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Less
