I find it fascinating how people use public spaces in urban landscapes. This is a video I grabbed of some amazingly talented young girls practicing a dance routine at More London Riverside. They told us their group is called Esteem and they were in a show at the Unicorn Theatre in March. (The ambient sound on the vid is from inside the restaurant where I was having lunch when I happened to glance round and see them strutting their stuff - for music, they were in fact playng tracks from their m...
Some funky street dancing in Trafalgar Square
I got up at 6am this morning as usual to go to work but found that all London buses had been cancelled and train services were severely disrupted due to a massive amount of snow that had fallen overnight. There was nothing for it but to stay home in the suburbs and frolic in the winter wonderland.Fortunately, thanks to the internet and broadband, I could work remotely from the snug warmth of my study - and, in fact, I was quite productive without the interference of phone calls and other disru...
Inspired by our friend's Nasi Lemak Lunch, we headed into Chinatown today to stock up on some ingredients for reviving our Chinese cooking skills. By chance, we came upon a lion dance during the Chinese New Year festivities, which I captured on my trusty mobile phone. The lion is going from shop to shop to bless the businesses with good luck in this Year of the Ox. You'll see the lettuce hung on the door of the shop by the shopowner as an offering to the lion - which the beast grabs eagerly to...
I headed down to the market in North Cross Road in East Dulwich on Saturday morning to hang out with my camcorder and see what shots I could grab. I had such a great time chatting with the local traders and their mates - everyone as so friendly and seemed to enjoy mugging for the camera. What was really distracting throughout was the wonderful smell of the hog roast you see at the start of the film. I couldn't wait to finish shooting and get some take-home boxes for lunch. And I can tell you -...
On my way home from work in the last few weeks, I've passed many houses in my South London neighbourhood of Dulwich with brightly lit Christmas decorations but I've not taken the time before to appreciate them properly. So, one evening, we took a stroll round the local streets, taking in the lights - and chancing upon some carollers along the way. Luckily, we had our home camcorder to hand to capture the festive mood for posterity. (We're not professional filmmakers so please forgive the sound...
Cooking Chinese paella on a rainy Sunday in London
Playing with Qik on my HTC phone instead of writing
I am always enchanted by anything "typically English" even though I've lived in the UK for over 30 years. This afternoon, we visited a neighbour's garden in the London suburbs, open to the public under the National Gardens Scheme. We pottered about looking at their shrubbery, roses and vegetabls while being entertained by the Swingtime Sweethearts singing WW2 favourites. We had cake and tea along with chaps in white panamas and ladies in sundresses - and a toddler waving the Union Jack.Marvell...
