A daily video blog emerging from a Creative Artists Workshop taking place in the Jamahal Kala Kendra in Jaipur. The workshop culminates in an exhibition on Saturday 9 April.
The show is opened by the Rajasthan minister of culture. Seems to go well. Artists receive strong responses from large audience. Open again tomorrow, then take down and you won't hear from me for a bit. Will update on progress of the Beyond Partitions project as it develops. Namaste cheers!
Last day before show opens.
Show coming up tomorrow. Work being put up, discussed, taken down, redone, re-displayed, work is looking better and better -but a bit chaotic. `everything here done with a hammer, neither screws or blu tac suffice. And we are short of screws but I have found some Blu Tac. Got plenty of hammers. Our catalogue has both theory practice, photographs and graphics. Will put online after the show.
Finalising the logo and graphic design, getting the title agreed. Bondita Sen documents the workshops and writes the text and Ruchi Jain designs the logo, styles the artist portraits and lays out the catalogue. The production of the artwork carries on. A bit of an essential nuts and bolts episode this one as we get closer to the show on Saturday.
Surender Singh is one of the artists in the workshop. ;We visited his workplace where he makes jewellery and the sequential working process of jewellery making parallels the way he does the paintings. Process by process, layer by layer. For this Friday he is creating a large new painting influenced by the patterns in the Jamahal Kala Kendra. We await the outcome.
On Sunday I visited the studio of the established Jaipur artist Vinay Sharma, who showed me his work and his gallery and studio. His notebooks were of particular relevance to the Creatives group, who have looked at using an old account book with drawings as a introduction to their exhibition. Vinay has been doing terrific drawing in old account books for many years -and the digital catalogue he showed me expressed the continuity of Jaipur artists practice from the past into the current age. ;S...
A bit of a big weekend in India. Scenes taken 5 minutes after India won the World Cup. The Tonk Road is a street in the southern area of Jaipur, 15 minutes from the JKK where the workshops are taking place. Just near to our hotel. I don't think much work got done on the artwork for the exhibition today.
We gathered for our daily meal at the Rajasthan place just across the way.Everybody was there except for the video maker and the mural painter, so it was useful to say what everyone is doing in connection with the exhibition next week. Some time later I had ;a further meal
End of a busy week approaches. Everyone is starting to produce work for a short exhibition next Saturday (9 April). This is a little survey of what some of the artists are doing. Big meet up tomorrow to decide the final nature and shape of the show.
