One of the best films of the year has it all...crime, drama, comedy, sports, and heart. “The Fighter” is based on the true story of two boxing brothers in the 1980s. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. Bale plays the role of Dickey Eklund the pride of blue collar Lowell, MA. He was destined to be a champion in the ring but after a humiliating defeat by Sugar Ray Leonard, he descended into a life of drugs and crime and goes to jail. His younger half-brother Mickey (Mark Wahlberg) takes up the banner and becomes “The Fighter.” Bale’s performance is oscar-worthy in a supporting role as the crackhead, bug-eyed brother and trainor. Wahlberg’s acting skills are pretty good as well, he trained for four years to get into boxing shape. Amy Adams does a solid job as the girlfriend. The scene stealers are the ladies who play the Ward posse. Whenever the big haired, trashy looking sisters showed up on screen I just started laughing. This is not your typical boxing movie but I think it may be one of the best I have ever seen. This is has Oscar written all over it, including supporting actor for Bale, best acting ensemble, and perhaps best picture. This classic story of a local boy who makes good is rendered electric by the tremendous performances. I love the fact that its NOT your typical inspirational sports movie. The deep, dark family dynamics are what I think make this film great.Go see for yourself... and stick around during the credits to see footage of the real Mickey and Dickey.
