This is an old film made with the co-operation of James Powell and sons ( Whitefriars ) circa 1938.
A video of this film was made a few years ago but it is no longer available. This video is not a copy but has been made from an original source. It has been made for the enjoyment of all lovers of Stained Glass . Regards Patrick
What a visual treat. A true time capsule. The soundtrack is gently ethereal, and the entire, too brief episode conveys a palpable sensation of peering from the dusty edges, into the work spaces of the immortal Powell/Whitefriars studio. Superbly trained craftspeople knew their trade and practiced it humbly and instinctivly.
Thank you so very much Patrick, for this gift. May it serve to inspire a RESPECT for the efforts and artworks of our forebearers in this quirky, mystical, wonderous art form, and maybe....just maybe...give pause to the hands of those who hubristically assume to "kill with kindness" ( however earnestly ) these sorts of vitreous masterworks, under the broad, diaphanous banner of RESTORATION.
Hi, Thanks for comments.................... Without these archives so much of this wonderful world would be lost. I will shortly uploading a clip of ' Pot Changing ' with some great shots of the " Crew " at the end. It was made at the same time as the ' Art of Stained Glass ' Regards Patrick.
I know of no other way to know where we are going than to see where we have been. This preservation piece of past workmanship is a testimony to how our craft has evolved into the stained glass we so called "artisans" of today freely enjoy. Never again shall I complain about how difficult stained glass can be. If one can learn anything at all from this video it is that so many have come before us and blazed the way for us to so easily express our artistic vision for a piece of artwork that hopefully will stand the tests of time. Thank you and I hope you will come across some more of these recordings.
