Steve Rosenbaum is a pioneer in consumer-generated content. He was among the first television producers to provide inexpensive video cameras to the public to create video. His show "MTV Unfiltered" demonstrated the promise and power of user-generated video before there was a Web. Steve gives us a little history lesson today. In the beginning of the interview, I grilled Steve a bit about his new company Magnify.net The company provides an elegant user interface to create video collections of streaming clips from various video sharing sites including Revver, Blip.TV and YouTube. But grabbing videos and putting them in a new advertising environment is a sticky business. On one had, Magnify.net provides a distribution platform for videos, which is great. What is not so great is that banner ads that are placed around videos on the original sharing site are lost. For some content producers and sharing sites, the impressions of those ads are lost as are the revenue. But, Steve makes a good cause for the imperative of maximizing views of clips and says he's working with sharing sites to maintain advertising flow.
