Funk the War, a demonstration to demand an end to the war in Afghanistan and for increased education funding, was violently attacked by police this evening. At least 10 people were arrested, many are still in custody right now. One of the arrestees was reported to be bleeding from her face after being tackled by two cops into the the base of a light pole, she is currently sitting in the back of a police car without access to medical attention.
In my personal opion i see group of people not listening to authorities and being unruly and disrespectful. Deserved everything they got. Thank you to the rochester police department for doing their job. The police department handeled it well. Never would of had violence if this group of people would have listened to authorities to begin with.GOOD JOB ROCHESTER POLICE DEPARTMENT!!!
I hope those assholes are still sitting in a jail cell. When the police ask you to do something, you listen. Show some respect. Peaceful protest, my ass. You were arrested because you were marching down the middle of the street and not getting out of the way of police sirens. I thank the police department for acting within their authority.
@deservedit and @FightFightFight, you weren't there. You also clearly lack the powers of observation to notice that all but one of the arrests are taking place on the sidewalk. The demonstrators did comply with police demands to leave the street. Moreover, some demonstrators never entered the street in the first place. If you think that 35 police cars responding to a demonstration of that size is good policy, then I certainly don't want you to have any discretion over how our tax dollas are spent. If just a fraction of those police cars had provided an escort, the public safety (including those of the demonstrators) would have been served. Remember, that is what the police are there for--to ensure the public safety.
Are you people kidding me? Good Job Rochester Police? You disgust me with your lack of patriotism. These kids were out speaking for change, peacefully demonstrating. I am sure most of you were 'hippies' back in the 60's protesting. Or you have all heard of a little thing called the Boston Tea Party. So were the brits right to try and shut us down? Kids like this are awesome and are exactly what we need in this failing country of fascist liberals and total neo con republicans. Read books and don't listen to FOX. Screw the Rochester Police for their police state tactics.
Even in your own obviously edited video, we could clearly see that protesters were marching down the middle of Main Street in the middle of the day, refusing to move over to the sidewalk despite repeated police requests to do so to keep order on the streets. As a veteran of your hated wars, I respect your right to protest, and have fought to defend it. I didn't necessarily agree with all reasons for war either, but decided that I had no right to complain about something unless I enlisted and saw how it works first hand. For all your bellyaching, you have never held the hand of an Afghani child who is dying of an easily preventable disease and gotten him the treatment he needs thanks to the U.S. Army. I'm so sick of people whining about something they know nothing about and never will.So many protesters, and so few of them I'm sure working for a living. You kids have a lot of growing up to do.
First off Thank you for your service. But that doesn't give you more of a say in anything this country does, or give you a better understanding. I am sorry, but that afghani kid wouldn't be sick or wounded if war wasn't in their country. Our bombs straffing cities where countless are wounded and killed. Innocents my friend. I am sick of people telling us we don't know. Oh we are educated, we are right and we will win!
You're thoroughly wrong about that child. He was sick because these third world country citizens think it's ok to throw all their garbage in their alleyways, crap and piss in the same alleys, then send their kids out to play in it. The kid had an infection from broken glass because of the culture he lives in, it has NOTHING to do with the Americans who are there to help. I strongly invite you to visit 1800goguard.com or goarmy.com to get a little first hand experience, and maybe some hair on your peaches.
Um...yes thanks for the service and taking care of a sick child and such; but one thing is wrong about that story. Why does it need to be a military that needs to come in and help? There are plenty of humanitarian organizations that could do the same job you did...without guns and killing many other innocent lives at the same time.
The terrorists are just as happy to blow up our humanitarian organizations. They don't go anywhere in these countries without a military escort for protection. For such an educated bunch, you sure don't know very much. The only thing that prevents our good-hearted humanitarian friends from being kidnapped, tortured and executed is the barrel of a gun.
Also, nobody needs to further patronize me by thanking me for my service. I did it out of duty, and require no thanks. A good thank you would be joining up and serving yourself.
First of all- for the person who mentioned that the police officers should've just given them a police escort instead of trying to get them to stop- you need to file for one. You can't just show up and hope they will oblige you.Secondly- to the person who wrote about a protester who had injuries and was "sitting in the back of a police car without access to medical attention" ...I'm sure they were on their way but were probably blocked by a "peaceful protest".The man shouting things to the crowd with his bullhorn sounding like he was a terrorist shouting out demands. We demand this, we demand that... If you want to be taken seriously then ACT serious. When you are marching down main street and obstructing traffic, and disrupting people's lives you won't get much sympathy from the masses.
Also just an FYI it might do everyone some good to go and read section 240.20 of the New York State Penal Code. It's the section regarding Disorderly Conduct.
This country has or is becoming a police state. That is clearly evident by the disregard for our Constitutional rights and clear abuse of power. How anyone can be a police officer today is beyond me. College students are finally rising up and the corporate powers that be are realizing this. Since they control our government it is clear as to why police are ending these PEACEFUL protests as quickly as possible without regard to consequences. CHARGE ON AND FIGHT
Yes, because marching down a street beating bongo drums is really accomplishing a lot. Fight the power.I am baffled at how the SDS Rochester group plans on hosting a convention to educate others on activism and protesting, yet they didn't even go through the necessary steps to obtain a permit or notify the city of Rochester of their march. Smooth move, guys.
I have to say, yes it is obvious that some of the people on here are cops. BIG WHOOP! They have the right to stand up for what they believe their opinions are too'' Well done to those who have figured that out. I just have to snicker to myself about what conspiracy theories are going through all those paranoid misguided minds right now. LMAO I think it is a little ridiculous that alot of people this day in age are just looking for something to B&*ch about because they want to be heard and very well know that they just aren't as important as they want to be. The war is happening, like it or not, sniveling college hippies who have never held a rifle for their country, or have worn a uniform in the name of the people and communities in this country do not have the success and establishment under their belts that out politicians do. Stop worrying about saving the world and do something to get yourself further, so that you can have the say to make a difference. I couldn't stand individuals like that when i lived in Rochester myself. Become something or someone that is publically or nationally recognized then do your b&*ching the legal and effective way! These are just personal opinions base on individual experiences for those who want to find something to complain about on my comment.
Just also to add in there. I already know that someone is going to try to tear me a new one, I know it ! But you complain about the fighting and the war, and all this stuff about people being fascists, But! hold your hats for this one. You want peace? lol... just the demonstrations alone is disruptive and forceful to the non-participants, the in your face, we don't care about the other civilians crap is stupid. You force your views and beliefs on others around you in the city to what? look as bad as these terrorist dictators that we fight against each day. I am not a cop, but i was over in that war serving in combat for almost 4 years when it first started. i hear too'' much crap about morality and immorality. war is war sometimes doing bad or immoral things is needed to cause the desired effect. It is not a perfect system war or law inforcement, just ask those police officers and us veterans. we try our best to do things safe and right, no matter how bad the situation, so shut it! I have had my fun ranting, don't lose sleep over me, all you protesters. that would just be sad and pathetic, lol
So many of you are missing the point. Let everyone in this country pray and be thankful that the Boston Tea Party started as a peaceful demonstration.Do you have a right speak out against your government? You certainly do. Does an organized march get more attention than a letter to the editor [assuming they even print it]? You decide.Do the police or any individual have the right to assault another person without provocation? Not in this country.A professionally trained force would have handled this much better. Permit or no permit. And they kids clearly got out of the way for the fire truck. If the city of Rochester wants to protect their reputation as a growing city with a the future, its probably not a good idea to jump to the defense of the [ir]responsible officers. When excessive force is allowed against a government's own people, the seed of dictatorship have already been planted.Let us not denounce organized public protest or the people brave enough to participate in it. Wether you agree with it or not, be proud that you live in a country that allows free speech.I happy to be proud of the soldiers who fight abroad to defend that right. But that doesn't mean I have to be proud of the reasons our government sends them there.
"2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.......27 cop cars here?" And theres 60 of you. I am glad to see that ppl are standing up for what they believe....I am all for that, but it looks to me that all you had to do is get on the side walk. As far as I can see there is no police attacks in this vid. There are only police officers trying to make an arrest.....for what idk the reasons, but it looks like the police did a good job.......ps if you look carefully there are children in this vid....shouldnt they be in school. Peace
Police brutality? Are you actually serious? I commend the rochester police department and all of their officers. I really find it funny that you so called "peaceful" demonstraters actually blocked emergency vehicles and risked other peoples lives. Shame on you, you hypocrites - just remember who you call to protect you when a crime has been committed against you or someone you love - THE VERY PEOPLE YOU ARE NOW RIDICULING.
to start those of you who CLAIM to have served in this military need to get over yourself...your not protecting anything in this country other than corporate interest...see why your overseas fighting for corporations...we are in OUR country fighting to educate OUR people...to help those of OUR citizens that need health care and food...so you keep allowing yourself to be used as a guinea pig for the military industrial complex and their test vaccines...keep cleaning up spent depleted uranium munitions..but dont think you will be viewed as a hero...empires always fall and this one is no different!!!
Hurray for the protesters! You all showed courage in the face of a brutal and cowardly attack. A peaceful and orderly protest attacked by twenty seven police cars in an attempt to silence you. The video shows there really isn't freedom of speech or freedom of assembly in this country, but people like you can help bring more liberty to our society. People who try to stand up for democracy, freedom and equality are always attacked by government. I note that all of you moved out of the way of the emergency vehicle, the claims of the police,corporate-controlled media and other ignorant people notwithstanding. Keep doing what you are doing! Power to the people.
When police tell you to do something, you do it. That simple. When you swear at police officers and defy their authority, you no longer have the right to call yourself 'peaceful.' Nice try tho
I used to live in Rochester. I'm glad I moved. These people were being disruptive and deserved to be arrested. It makes no difference WHERE they got arrested; it matters what they were doing BEFORE they got arrested. Did someone actually say the police were wrong because these people were arrested on the sidewalk? What about blocking traffic and emergency vehicles before the police arrested them?
In case you missed the point... Any demonstration that blocks a road--any road but especially a busy main road such as this--is not "peaceful". Or do you not have dictionaries?Peaceful means "not characterized by strife or conflict". Yet by purposely blocking traffic and emergency vehicles, these idiots were knowingly creating strife and conflict. Good luck explaining how I am wrong. Your only argument requires dipping into the "This is what we have to do in order to get our point across" line of garbage, which doesn't alter the fact that this was not a "peaceful" demonstration.I don't want to tell you what I'd be tempted to do on a really bad day if I were driving on that road with these idiots in my way.
When doing a peaceful protest you should be keeping everyone's best interest at mind. In order to do that you need to take the proper steps to make your protest legal and safe. Everyone does have freedom of speech but you need to make proper authorities aware of your protest so that they can be prepared to make sure things do not get out of hand or so that the protesters are not attacked or in any harm as well as other civillians. I understand everyone has their own opions but i do not feel sympothy for the people arrested during the protest. When the police were trying to make an arrest people were interfearing. All of this could have been avoided if proper percautions were followed by the protestors. Maybe next time you guys will realize that you are not exempt from the law and you need to follow the same laws as everyone else in our country.
So the police were there for? To protect who? To keep what from happening? Because? And if the cops would have never showed up what would have happened?
