This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 11th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com).
Theme: The movement beyond cultural schemes of meaning (religions and ideologies) can produce stasis and desperation, as the disenchanted individual once again confronts unstructured chaos. Alternatively, identity with a rigid and totalitarian ideology may be adopted. However, such identification eventually deprives life of its spontaneous and sustaining meaning, and turns the ideological adherent towards vengeful destruction.
