East Village, April 14, 2007-- A protest and rally at 49 East 3rd Street, in support of the building's rent-stabilized tenants. Families in all 15 apartments are being evicted en masse. The landlords, a husband and wife team, have applied to convert the 15 apartments into a private mansion. Rent-stabilization not withstanding, NY Courts just overturned a ruling protecting the tenants, setting a precedent for other landlords in the city to empty apartments on similar grounds [owner occupancy] This section of the video specifies how the landlord couple justify the need for the building's five floors.

I've been reading about the Rent War of the 1840s. Same fight. See Tin Horns and Callico by Henry Christman and LAnd and Freedom by Reeve Huston.
