The Invincible Love of Jesus (Luke 20.9-18)

March 29th is the conclusion of our Lenten preaching series. Over the course of the past two weeks, we will have (hopefully!) made extravagant promises of healing and new birth to the congregation on behalf of the Lord. Today, we wish to communicate that Jesus will visit his people with these extravagant blessings no matter what. His love for us is invincible. The Gospel reading communicates the master’s love for his cherished vineyard. Even though the vineyard has fallen into the hands of wicked tenants, the master nevertheless goes to extreme and dangerous ends to retrieve the vineyard from the wicked tenants. The pastoral application of today’s sermon is to communicate God’s invincible love for sinners, and also to issue a warning. Those who do not receive the Son have their place in the vineyard taken from them and given to another. This is the final warning issued before we enter into the deep penitence of Holy Week.
