The Sierra of Zongalica, Vera Cruz is home to many thousands of Nahua speakers ( the language of the Aztecs). Traditional costume is still very much alive in the region and the belt woven in Santa Cruz Tequila is very much a part of that textile tradition. During recent field work documenting the state of traditional costume in the region this film was taken.

The brocade design on these belts is very distinctive and is one of the more finely woven belts in all of Mexico.

The backstrap loom is the ancient loom used to create many of the textiles used by indigenous people in Mexico. It is also now used to create commercial products for resale. Watch the video closely and during the minute long video the weaver was able to place one fine strand of thread.
