This week Rebecca Newberry, special projects coordinator from Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley (GAGV), joins us. She discusses two of special projects that GAGV has taken on, Campus Out and a Queer Homeless/ Runaway documentation project, as well as many other issues.
On the use of the word "queer" Rebecca explains: " For older folks in the LGBT community the word "queer" stimulates this really uncomfortable negative response, because it was a hate directed word and it is a word that is used to insult, to hurt members of the LGBT community. However, its really been reclaimed over the past ten years or so by youth, in a way thats an umbrella term to describe different orientations, different identities in a way that's inclusive. So we joke about always adding more letters to this LGBT...A...I thing, now we're, young people, are starting to use, the word queer to be all inclusive and not have to spell everything out all the time."
