We live in an era in which there are more generations working together in our workforce than ever before. People are living longer, are healthier, and subsequently working longer. Also, with the increasing cost of healthcare, people are in some cases staying in the workforce longer in order to maintain health insurance benefits. Add to the people who are working longer the people entering the workforce, and there are up to four generations currently working together. People who are considered to be Generation X and Generation Y have different expectations for their workplace than do Baby Boomers or employees of The Silent Generation (or Depression Era Babies.) In this first of a two-part series, Host Helene Wasserman of Littler Mendelson, P.C. discusses with guest Pat Romboletti of Sage Executive Search the importance of understanding how to interview and hire “Gen X” and “Gen Y” applicants to that everyone’s workplace expectations are explored.
