Snakes is constructed out of images made during 2011 in coastal areas of the west Pacific. The dominant influence is the tea-tree forest (leptospermum). Mingling among the tea-trees are Mesopotamian-Celtic snakes, spiraling in the vegetation. Their perspective is taken. Forms of the ocean feature also. The music accompanying snakes is the complete 4th string quartet of Becerra played by the Phila String Quartet (Cc-by-sa from Free Music!). This is the whole piece as he intended it to be heard. You may recognise two of the movements from Intertidal Zone where the first and fourth movement also are heard. This clip explores visual effects achieved with layers, colour change and movement. It is inspired by the shapes and forms of the marine environment of the Pacific Ocean near eastern Australia. The music is the Pastorale of Ludwig van Beethoven. Marine features the Silver Gull footprints in the sand of Manly Beach as well as the shells and fish living on the rocks and pipes of the beach. The surging, oscillating, watery feel is complemented by the calmly repetitive music which although intended by Beethoven to reflect the countryside also captures the endless returning of the ocean. A flash animation of the leaves of the forests of Australia in all their diversity, set to the rhythmical nature music of lyrebirds, frogs and black cockatoos - an amazing concert! The rhythms of the common eastern froglet (crinia signifera), which are recorded at North Head in Sydney in large numbers after rain, begin the concert and are enhanced by the repetitive call of the superb lyre bird. Experimental music with oceanic images which are inspired by the shapes and atmospheres of the Pacific. The animated film is the realisation of an animation style using drawing with variable colour areas. Maintaining the clarity of distinct colours, multiple layers interact as colours change. The images are inspired by the South Pacific Ocean near Manly. The nature-music is composed from the birds, frogs, thunder and rain of Gleniffer, New South Wales, Australia. Elements of the bell birds, whip birds, doves, lewins honey eater and fairy wrens are used to generate rhythms to accord with the human ear. The rhythm of the frogs, rain and thunder are universal. This imaginary mythical journey in mind-space is inspired by the landscape and remnants of culture of the sandstone region near Sydney. The haunting sounds of the intimate conversations of a large group of black and yellow Calyptorhynchus funereus (black cockatoos) accompany the journey. Stretched out on the sandstone rock platforms around Sydney, with their engraved mythical characters from long ago and not so long past, one can relax into a mind-space far from the demands of instrumental everyday thinking and closer to a being unmediated by social necessity. The flow of thought takes one into the depths of the stone on a journey surrounded by mythical beings and returns through the cosmos back to waking perception. On rock surfaces around Sydney, engravings of whales appear in many variations together with other mythical characters. The associated orally transmitted stories and myths have been lost and were not documented when these places were occupied in the early colonial period. The cultures were destroyed and many artifacts were removed. What now remains are outline drawings carved into the stone surface. Absent are the less durable attributes including paintings in materials such as charcoal, ochre, plant materials (orchids) and blood, adornment of spaces with burnt wooden artifacts and bark paintings as well as rock arrangements. Absent are the rich contextualisations by the people who belonged to this land. Expressing the timelessness of the universe. Such timeless moments can be achieved occasionally if you go away from the sounds of working and getting things done, far from town, far from suburbia. Deep in the night timelessness can be found of in wild remote places, even on the edge of a city if there are no tourists there. In timeless spaces the person shrinks to infinitesimal but can approach their true being, at home in their universe. The music of Bach expresses continuity and this recording is from another time taken from a cylinder. An appreciation of water and the life systems on Earth made possible by it is the theme of this film.The soundtrack is Earth-music composed from the tonal foundation of water sounds, sampled at a waterfall and its cascades north of Sydney, Australia. It includes moments of frogs and birds as well as the trickle and flows of water on sandstone.This technique of composition using Earth sound elements is implemented in the interactive software nature music, and discussed here in relation to the ideas of Douglas Kahn.Water is among the most important substance on Earth for humans and for most of the animals we know well. It is one of the main defining characteristics of our planet. Despite this, it has a low status in modern times. It is abused, wasted and treated as valueless. Rivers and oceans are garbage and pollution dumps. Urban water supplies are wasted on private suburban swimming pools and for washing cars. Even in low-rainfall areas, a rainy day is considered to be bad weather.Water requires a special status. This animation of trees begins with coastal Australian trees and moves slowly into the coastal hinterland spaces of eucalypts and banksias. Rain forest environments emerge and then individual trees standing alone. Single trees blend into European trees. Central European forests are depicted as abstract chaos. Deciduous forests and pine forests appear in different seasons. Finally the scene returns to Australia with the coastal myoporum lending its elements to a meditational field.This short film is dedicated to the trees of the world which are disappearing all around across the planet in cities and in rural areas at unprecedented rates - a process which threatens the life forms on Earth. They are cleared away in cities like rubbish with a destructive power never known in history. The countryside is reduced to bald hills. The film is dedicated to their beauty and the wealth which their wondrous qualities bring to existence.
