by Moshe Yudkowsky. This is my keynote talk from Cluecon 2009, which was held at the beginning of August. In this talk I discuss Voice over IP, otherwise known as Internet telephony, with about 150 VoIP developers. The promise of VoIP is that it allows any small device with network connections to act as a telephone, which means wide scope for creative ways to have dumb appliances become very smart communications devices. On the other hand, this can cause plummeting creativity for knowledge workers as the number of devices that can interrupt your day become more and more prevelant -- and that would be a terrible mistake. In the talk I discuss ideas about how VoIP can not only not disrupts, but perhaps one day actually help people maintain their focus on their creative work.
