sound installation::2001 "On the Question of Multiples" is an audio-visual installation. It is composed of custom sound electronics and five speakers each filled with five origami paper balls. The sound generated by the audio circuitry is below the level of human hearing (20HZ), only the movement of the speaker cones can be perceived. The sound heard by the viewer is that of the paper balls striking each other in a chaotic fashion. The frequency of the sound source is slowly ramped up and down, at times causing the speakers and the balls to move frantically, at times to execute slow "breath-like" motions. Electronics generating the sound going to each of the speakers are programmed to drift in and out of phase with each other. This causes a rich pattern of behavior to emerge among the multiple elements of the installation.
