Overview of how Designmerge variable printing plugin works. Aside from the functions around the setting of rules, it's all very non-geeky! In fact in some instances for simple variable jobs, you can bypass the rules feature altogether, having your database expert sort this for you and do it within the supplied database. All other features are easy and familiar for Adobe inDesign users, just requiring a few sample documents to be generated and output. Like everything in life, practice (and good training) makes perfect.
