Central text: Luke 3:23–38: “Now Jesus himself…was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli … the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.” I. God promised a Redeemer from the seed of Eve already in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). II. He narrowed the pool of candidates for Savior to the descendants of Seth (Genesis 4:25–6). III. then to Noah’s descendants (Genesis 6:5–8) IV. then to Shem’s (Genesis 9:18–27) V. then to Abraham’s (Genesis 12:1–3); VI. then to Isaac’s (Genesis 17:15–21; 26:3b–4) VII. then to Jacob’s (Genesis 25:21–6; 28:10–14) VIII. then to Judah’s (Genesis 49:1–10) IX. and finally to David’s (1 Chronicles 17:11–14).
