“Will the year 2011 bring a new generation of gaming console?” asks Louis Cléroux, who watched the TMT Predictions online. Duncan Stewart, Director of Deloitte Canada Research, responds that the console cycle is five years, and that we would have reached the end of it. However, leading manufacturers of consoles are announcing only incremental upgrades: “The console cycle will likely be every 10 years instead of five. The power of the latest high-end console is simply, even today, more than what the average user needs.” But what about games like Angry Birds or Farmville? Instead of buying a $400-console with 10 $50-games for a total of $1,000, people would rather buy casual games as applications for $1.99, or play games that are free and supported by advertisers or in-game subscriptions, like virtual hay or virtual goods in Farmville. “Fairly serious gamers have gone from the tens of millions, a couple of years ago, to the hundreds of millions today.” http://www.tmtpredictions.ca View other videos of the TMT Predictions 2011 event in Montreal Less
