Monday, 3rd March 2008. Gary Lawrence of Arup discussed the potential of an integrated urbanism approach at the CTBUH 8th World Congress in Dubai. Drawing on lessons learned from the planning and development of a new, low-carbon eco-city on an island opposite Shanghai in China, the presentation posed that no matter what the scale, integrated approaches – both in understanding the true nature of the issues and designing solutions – are predictive or more successful outcomes. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), based at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, is an international not-for-profit organization sponsored by architecture, engineering, planning, development and construction professionals. Founded in 1969, the Council’s mission is to disseminate best practice information on tall buildings and healthy urban environments, to facilitate business exchange amongst the international tall building / built environment community, and to make the latest knowledge available to professionals in a useful form.
