The newest creation from F-Stop Beyond host/creator Ron Dawson, this is to filmmakers what F-Stop Beyond is to photographers. Since Ron is a filmmaker himself, he could no longer fight the urge to have the same kind of in-depth, poignant and personal conversations with professionals in his industry. And like FSB, guests run the gamut from the obvious to the obscure. Established professionals in Hollywood like X-Men producer Ralph Winter, or Terminator: Salvation DP Shane Hurlbut; to social media juggernauts like international cinematographer and HD DSLR guru Philip Bloom; to amazing short film filmmakers like fellow Atlanta local Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures; and even wedding and event filmmakers like wunderkind and USC film grad Kevin Shahinian. Many more are already in the can and/or in the works.
A few weeks ago I watched a documentary that I believe every visual artist and musician needs to see. Today! It is called PressPausePlay and it's a look at the digital revolution through the eyes of some amazing artists and marketers, not the least of which Moby and Seth Godin. Today I'm honored to have on the show, all the way from Sweden, the co-directors of the film Victor Köhler and David Dworsky. David and Victor share with us how they, with no formal film school training, and at the tend...
Today's guest is a man who knows his stuff. To sit and listen to him prattle off filmmaking tech jargon is like listening to "klingon." I've poked fun over the past couple weeks at this "geek talk," most openly in a recent episode of The Flip Side. I'm speaking of none other than Matt Jeppsen of FreshDV.com. We have a great conversation about the terms we filmmakers call ourselves, Matt's journey from IT to filmmaker, the start of FreshDV.com, the importance of differentiating yourself as a cr...
November 3, 2011 was quite a whirlwind of a day for filmmakers all across the world. The stills camera manufacturer that unintentionally launched a new era in filmmaking with the 5D Mark II—Canon—made an announcement of a new camera body: the EOS C300. Today on the show we have one of the few filmmakers allowed to make a pre-production short film on the camera; the man who is largely responsible for the aforementioned digital filmmaking evolution—Mr. Vincent Laforet himself. As is customary, w...
Today is part 2 of 2 of my series on video business coaching. Last week we had Kris Simmons who has been a very successful corporate video producer over the past 10+ years. Today we have the head coach of wedding filmmaking, Matt Davis of Life Stage Films. You may remember Matt as the guy behind my post "the best wedding video promo on the planet." He's only been in the business for about five years, but in that time he as grown to become a 3-time EventDV Top 25 videographer, and has a very su...
Today we start a 2-part mini series on running a successful video business. We have two of the countries top video business coaches coming on the show. This week we have commercial video producer and the coach behind Mind Your Video Business, Kris Simmons. Kris started out in this business shooting for other studios. It wasn't long before he was making more money than he was at his full time job. So he started his own studio. In the past 11 years he has seen the whole gamut, from shooting wedd...
No, this is not a title for a groundbreaking Supreme Court ruling. It's a reference to today's guest guest and the documentary film he's shooting. Jared is a seasoned filmmaker and cinematographer (and he can really call himself that as he's worked extensively with actual 35mm films). He's co-founder of Wide Open Camera in Los Angeles, CA and has been a major contributor of knowledge and gear to the burgeoning DSLR filmmaking crowd, reporting for the popular site Cinema5D, and selling various ...
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, greetings and salutations. Today I have for you royalty in the flesh. The Duke and Duchess of wedding filmmaking (or, are they the king and queen, not quite sure) - Steve and Laura Moses of Vantage Point Custom Films. If you work with your spouse in your business, this is a must listen to episode. Steve and Laura have been named to the EventDV Top 25 Event Videographers in the industry for five consecutive years. They've won who knows how many other awards...
Today my series on YouTube/Online filmmakers comes to a close with UK filmmaker Robin Schmidt (aka "El Skid"). Robin is an very talented, award-winning filmmaker who has a ton of experience with music videos and producing high quality commercial and broadcast work (although he still doesn't think he's good enough to enter into film festivals). He also has quite a bit of experience dealing with YouTube and playing the game. Today on the show we discuss how a whole lot of stuff. Does it make sen...
YouTube has become so much more than just a site filled with viral videos of cute kittens or toddlers stoned on laughing gas. It's a place where some amazing filmmakers go post work that is highly entertaining and inspirational. Today I continue my series on online filmmakers with Matt Koval, one of the winners of YouTube's NextUp contest. Matt has garnered quite a following and name for himself, particularly because of his comedy series "The Fuplers" (see an episode on the blog post for this ...
Unless you've been living under a social media rock, chances are, if you're in the film or photography industry, you've heard of my guests today. They are Lan and Vu, the brothers Bui. Today we have a jam-packed show that continues my online filmmakers series. The Bui Brothers have made a huge impact on the industry offering education about DSLR filmmaking and social media marketing specifically as it relates to photography and video. Today we get the 4-1-1 on their pre-photography/filmmaker l...
