For the first time Martha Graham Dance Company is giving you a chance to ReMash Graham history.When Martha Graham’s Clytemnestra premiered in 1958 it became an instant hit, so it’s no surprise that its 2008 revival has followed in its footsteps.So why stop there? Why not discover 21st century parallels to this Ancient Greek Graham classic.And why don’t you discover them for us?We have posted five videos online for you to remix, just like the master herself. Each video depicts a character from Trojan War.You can choose from Helen of Troy, Electra, Clytemnestra, Cassandra, or a more abstract character – the Messenger of Death.Choose one of the characters, take that video, and rework it (remix it, remash it, remaster it, whatever).Create a modern twist on these ancient characters through current pop culture news, personalities or events.The possibilities are endless: recast a character in contemporary style, change the music, add a background, learn the movement, develop your own group variation, place your character of choice in another dramatic or cultural context,…Use your 21st century imagination and BRING IT!Show us your best, and you could win a $500 prize.The winning video will be featured live at one of our upcoming performances.The competition opens on February 1st, 2009 and the submissions deadline is March 31, 2009. The Messenger of Death
MESSENGER OF DEATHThis solo is the wild card; It is not a specific character from Greek Drama but was created by Martha Graham to create an atmosphere of foreboding and inevitability. This abstract figure can represent many things: Fate, Fear, Guilt, Inevitability, Karma, etc. He sets the tone for Graham’s telling of the Agamemnon saga in Clytemnestra.

Dancing in the Fields
www.clytemnestraproject.comAs part of Peter Sparling’s Composition class, students have been devising their own personal Movement ID’s. During class, Peter looked out the window, saw a field, and had the inspiration to videotape everyone’s Movement ID’s at the same time - in the field.We had 2 cameras and 37 dancers. The video features original choreography from each individual dancer.
