Originally recorded April 11, 2003. Susan Stonich is a professor of Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Stonich's research focuses on the effects of economic development on human societies and the natural environment in Central America. Her projects have concentrated on the consequences of nontraditional export growth along the Pacific Coast and also the effects on human health and nutrition associated with intensified tourism development. Her studies also focus on the radialization of local groups around environmental issues and the emergence of grass-roots environmental movements of the poor. Less
