Response to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmHN3JtyUXg As I mentioned, this is the ONLY point that I agree with Kirk Cameron and disagree with ZOMGitsCriss. Everything else Cameron spouts I may have bought when I was a fundamentalist creationist, but now that I’m more skeptical, I realize it’s utter bullshit! However, ZOMGitsCriss is clearly wrong when she says that our rights do not come from God, but man. First of all, the great enlightenment thinkers—from John Locke to Thomas Jefferson—realized that our rights must be given to us to us, both naturally and supernaturally, by birth. If our rights come from nature and God, they cannot be taken away from us—save through due process of law. But if it comes from man—more specifically, the state—then it can be easily taken away by man for any reason that man gives, be it just or not. Thus why the Declaration of Independence claims our rights “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights” and why it recognizes “Nature's God”. This is also why I am a theist/deist, as it helps aid in my libertarian outlook. And before anyone says: no, I do not believe that America is a “Christian Nation” in the sense that it should be a theocracy where the Bible is law. I do, however, believe it is a nation with a “Christian Heritage”, as Christianity has played an important part in our history (especially the founding) and culture. After all, our concepts of liberty and freedom are Christian in nature, as they originate from the Christian doctrine of free will. This does not mean all people have to be Christian in order to be American, but it does mean that citizens of all faiths must recognize the significance of Christian values as it implies to American history and culture.
