About this original series

The Arts Council for Monterey County's annual Champions of the Arts Gala honors members of the Monterey County community who have made outstanding contributions to making the arts a greater part of the lives of everyone living in our region. The proceeds benefit the Arts Council's Professional Artists in the Schools program which provides arts education to about 12,000 students throughout Monterey County each year. Join us January 24, 2009 at the Embassy Suites in Seaside, CA for a gala artists reception, a brillant silent auction, gourmet dinner, an envocation by poet Adela Castillo, entertainment by the Spirit of Salinas Irish Dancers and Andreas Fault, as well a moving tributes to the Champions. This year we honor cowboy painter legend Jack Swanson for Lifetime Achievement; Ariel Theatrical's Gail Higginbotham as Luminary; Artist and Advocate Amalia Mesa-Baines as Educator; Youth Arts Collective as Nonprofit; Philanthropists David and Susan Gill; Friend of the Arts David Allan; and a Special Tribute to Erin Gafill and Tom Birmingham, founders of of the Big Sur Arts Iniatiative.
