The Center for Inquiry Austin, Texas Citizens for Science and UT Section of Integrative Biology present a program about the current status of the fight to keep evolution at the forefront in science education entitled: "Science Education in Texas: Keeping It Religion-free" There will be a question and answer after the talks. Speakers will be in order of appearance: Steven Schafersman The Talk: "How Will Texas Oppose Aggressive, Organized Creationism in Texas?" Dr. Steven Schafersman will discuss how Texas science supporters will oppose the continuing efforts of aggressive, organized Creationists in Texas. The Speaker: Schafersman was a college and university science professor for 22 years, founded and have been president of Texas Citizens for Science since 1980, and currently work as a consulting scientist in West Texas, primarily for the petroleum industry. His academic research involved evolutionary paleontology. Ed Brayton The Talk: "Yes Virginia, it really is all about religion" Ed Brayton will talk about the religious nature of the Intelligent Design movement. The Speaker: Ed Brayton is the voice behind the popular blog Dispatches from the Culture Wars, the founder and current president of Michigan Citizens for Science and also the web site The Panda's Thumb. Josh Rosenau The Talk: "Nothing new under the sun: The evolution of creationism" The central irony of the creation-evolution controversy is how rapidly and frequently creationism evolves. Josh Rosenau, a staffer at the National Center for Science Education, describes how creationist strategies have changed, what to expect in the future, and how to protect accurate science education in the public schools. The speaker: Joshua Rosenau spends his days defending the teaching of evolution at the National Center for Science Education.
