The growing pains and triumphs of moving to the country, fixing up an old house and working the land. Sustainable agriculture, first trials with animal husbandry, farmers markets, wood working, home repairs, cooking, cleaning, crafting, making messes and playing with the dog. A little something for everyone.
We grew a bunch of these along with pole beans and among the sunflowers last year. They thrive where they can climb. The blooms are small, but very red and very plentiful. The foliage is nice and light. A great climbing annual.Music: Cool Mornings by Ken Verneecke on Jamendo.com
The zinnia is a must have for our garden. The variety of warm colors and bloom styles and bloom length make them very worth the minimal effort. They can grow tall and may need some support to keep them out of garden paths. Last year we started our seeds in zip-locked dampened coffee filters. Once they sprouted we moved them to soil cells. This method worked very well, but I'm starting seeds earlier this year. Music: Va by Nikila on Jamendo.com
I was tempted to buy a post puller - who isn't at some point in their life? I did dig a few out and even managed to break some railroad-tie sized posts below ground level by pulling them with the truck (I also managed to break the straps I used). Nothing is quite as satisfying though as managing to extract an entire post without making a larger hole than necessary. This episode shows how I managed to do it. Cosmos make for a colorful addition to any garden. They are annual, but can drop seed and grow again on their own next season. Growing to over 3 feet tall is not a challenge for most varieties. Keep them in the sun for maximum blooms. A great bloomer!
A nice sunny weekend to watch the birds eat seed. The music, by Loveshadow, is available on ccmixter.org.
Day Lillies are pretty cool. Unless they're the orange ones. This is a proof of concept video using CrazyTalk5 and some pictures from the garden. I'd like to do this kind of thing for all our flowers. Highlighting their needs and worries.
The project started simply to remove the pine tongue and groove paneling in the kitchen. Anne found 8 door size windows at the Habitat Restore and we thought this might be a fun way to practice installing one. It's added the illusion of more space in the kitchen and certainly adds more light. Figuring out the electrical took a day and return trips to the hardware store -- once is never enough. Learned that 12-2 is a good gauge for outlet wire.Music: Goodbye Mr. Rogers by cdk on ccmixter.org
