National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is November 14-21, 2011. According to the Chicago Coalition for Homelessness, the number of adult homeless is at least 21,000. The City's count is based on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's definition of homelessness: "when an individual lacks a fixed, regular and adequate place to sleep or who regularly spends the night in a shelter, similar institution, or a place not meant for human habitation." Beacon Therapeutic (www.beacon-therapeutic.org) provides Homeless Outreach Services within 27+ shelters throughout Chicago. Highly trained and mobile clinicians help children and families cope with the trauma of being homeless and support them in gaining the self-sufficiency and self-determination to become stably housed. Lovea Smith, MA, LCPC, and DFSS Supervisor, discusses how Beacon is combating hunger and homelessness in our City.
