We were visiting Maui as guests of the Maui Visitors Bureau and were booked for a sailing canoe venture. This was going to be the highlight of my week as you all know how much I love the Hawaiian canoe! But, the wind was in town and the trip was cancelled, much to my disappointment. Maui is not called the "Magic Isle" for nothing though! Since we were already at the beach, we went in for a swim. The water is clear and beautiful so naturally I was underwater straight away. And then I heard something really familiar, but familiar only from my iPod not from "real life." Sure enough, it was the whales singing to me, "Don't be disappointed Rox! We use words all day everyday yet rarely stop to feel the energy they pack. I think it is the energy that causes confusion, less than the definition sometimes. We assume others think words feel the same way but they often don't! We assume that a "story is just a story" but it's not! It is also the energy from that story. At home we have a small place with low ceilings, and no view. At the Hotel Wailea, we have a large room, high ceilings, and an incredible view! Rox is back on the beach this week with a little "beachwalks philosophy" debriefing and looking back at the overnight embark on the USS Nimitz. Shane has dropped in a few more clips that we also wanted to share with you. Over the past few decades, it appears the military has learned some things the rest of us are still catching up on. If you provide good training and you have reliable procedures and consequences, then just about anything is doable. The main point stressed to us was that the military exists primarily to prevent war, not win war. I went on a 5-day silent intensive with Lola Jones a few weeks ago. For me it was pure heaven. I have in the past done 24 hours of silence on my birthday, and loved the clarity I experienced. To be able to ignore all others and go within myself for listening, for sharing, for counsel, was very powerful. There is a lot of noise, especially in my work on the social web (twitter, etc) And much as I love it, I was yearning to talk to the divine, to God directly. I can say that the moment we dropped into silence, having prepared for over 2 weeks, my mind came alive with conversation and insight, as if I were seeing my wise best friend after a very long absence. Curiously enough, I still became quite close to the others on the retreat. We shared the energy of this experience - far more powerful than sharing words, which fail me so much of the time. There was more to this retreat that I will talk about later. For now, I offer up silence as a way to connect with your #1 - your large self, the divine you. And then you become such a gift to others. A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version. Updating my database: servers do it automatically every few minutes in some cases- the Internet is so smart, it knows we are constantly changing! One of the things I am changing is feeling under-appreciated. I had this awareness that I get my satisfaction and pleasure from what I am doing in the moment. Yet I too often have front-loaded and back-loaded things with expectations. They impact the energy and the experience itself. I am choosing to give up that habit as I am a pleasure seeking person! I have re-purposed the pity pot I used to have into a compost bin where my "I am done with that" thoughts go to be reconfigured. I've been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis aka the Bikini Liberation Front. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have - it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Our car is 6.5 yrs old but has only 40,000 miles (eh - living on an island!) I have way more miles in my frequent flier accounts than the odometer of the Ford Escape. Statistics can prove anything. Old Thinking: That’s bad! New Thinking: Use math to my advantage, to help me feel better, so I become untethered to what is holding me back. Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. I love this style especially at the beach - somehow the magic of a minute can capture the serenity, the solitude, the vastness of the ocean, the playfulness of children - all without any words or planning at all. It's been a long time since we've been out on the water together. Our friends Eric, Stacey, and Kaile got a new 4-man outrigger canoe. Shane, Eric, and I took it out - saving a seat for you! Shane's Uncle Bob is an educator in Nebraska and he connected us with three second-grade classrooms at Linden Elementary School. More and more brave souls are leaving their "known worlds" for life as an adventure, the kind without a job for a safety net. Decades ago the book appeared, Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow that really knocked loose some hard-formed notions. Still, only one generation has grown up with that message, so it has barely made a dent in our global consciousness. Some people are using volunteering as a step in that direction. Such is the story of my friend BJ Wishinsky who is now at Anita Borg Institute and also Joe Philipson the photographer who is helping to define a whole new sector: social media photographer. I'd also to thank the many volunteers who helped on Podcamp Hawaii. Judi Clark was both the WordCamp wrangler and the one who helped me track and acknowledge the many volunteers on that event. Kyle Nishioka was the tech and venue manage and did a wonderful job working with our many vendors. Shane Robinson aka Secret Cameraman built the website and set up all of the live streaming, plus created a very cool desktop application that allowed attendees to fill out evaluations on the spot while watching the live stream or following the Twitter stream! A good example of the non-linear-ness of the process of change is Dr. James Prochaska's, Stages of Change Theory. He describes 5 stages of "change readiness" - each of which is responsive to certain processes or approaches. People who successfully change a behavior, will not usually progress through the stages in a straight line, but more in a spiral, relapsing some and then moving forward again. It seems we are taking on more and more complexity and using tools like mind-mapping that allow us to show relationships that are nuanced than a straight line. It's true even with business models, where there are ways to "get paid" by "paying it forward" or helping someone who then helps someone else who then buys from you. So I am catching up on Survivor again. It is quite dramatic how losing a challenge becomes so self-defeating, and in itself seems to trigger a cascade of downward performance. I have been wondering what comes first in this chicken or egg scenario - losing or the loser's mentality? If you really want to play the game, then recognize that it is a game and winning or losing don't matter. If you think of yourself as a competent gamer though, you build your psyche and that builds your body and your creativity and your connectivity. Do you think of yourself as a racist? Chances are no, That doesn't mean you don't have latent racism. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the NY Times that really helps to explain it. "Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously." The cure? Out yourself when you have a racist thought, even if it's embarrassing. It helps I think to flush up those legacy thoughts that have been passed down from generation to generation, just like, "put a coat on or you'll catch a cold!" I discovered the McKinsey, the consulting firm, now releases some of their white papers as podcasts. I like the somewhat formal, research-driven, unemotional yet yet not cold-hearted or partisan perspectives. The one on Hidden Flaws in Strategy I found insightful, as it included several practical examples of how we become vulnerable to the emotional filters that can be applied to decision making. How true that what we own, often appears to be more valuable to us, than it is to others. "Like new" does not equal "used." I was thinking about the old Sufi tale about the man and his son, and their changing fortunes/misfortunes, as seen across the span of time. I got a bit distracted today but I was wanting to make a point about how we are interconnected - and that is from the "good news bad news" department. Some things others do we are stuck cleaning up. It's not right but is, is. I find the faster I can process my anger, the faster I can get to "OK now what can be done about it?" Living on an island there are all kinds of examples of where we overlap with each other and are subject to side effects of each other. Just as in the movie I saw last weekend, Flash of Genius. Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. I was recently invited to be one of 44 women in technology around the world who on August 11th, documented their day. The goal, organized by Sonja Bernhardt, was to illustrate women in every time zone with diverse technology careers so as to inspire young women to choose tech as a career path. It seems we are taking on more and more complexity and using tools like mind-mapping that allow us to show relationships that are nuanced than a straight line. Are you like me? Staying up late working on my computer tends to make me hungry. It seems like I am burning calories, and that warrants having a snack. Well, apparently the brain is tricking us a bit by creating a hunger connection without the usual caloric expenditure. So over time, the less you sleep and the more you are thinking the more likely you are to gaining weight! Guess it is time to use my brain to ignore what my brain is telling my tummy. We saw my friend Paul on the beach today - he was walking instead of swimming due to the bloom of Portuguese Man-o-war (tiny jellyfish) in the bay. Me? Seems the more I travel the easier it is for me to get cranky. Today, a RT fare from HNL to DTW to HNL cost $700 but a one-way fare cost $1100! That is not about fuel prices...Anyway, I am learning to just pull my aura in and focus on myself, in the midst of the madding crowds. And curiously, after an hour or so, people are not bothering me. It's this concept of "hui hui" or blending together without actually having to interact. We get trapped into thinking other people have to change for us to be happy or content, but really, sometimes all that's necessary is to just let it be and focus inward.
