In 1991 Algonquins of Barriere Lake negotiated a groundbreaking agreement with Canada and Quebec giving their joint managment of their traditional territorty.Both governments refuse to honor the agreementOct 6 2008: The community peacefully blockades highway 117, three hours north of Ottawa. Their demands: that Canada and Quebec honour signed agreements and respect their traditional government.The government sends in police with tear gas instead of negotiators; so Barriere Lake is back on the highway November 18th.
