A lawsuit in the 1980s resulted in a process for the election of Peoria at-large city councilmen where voters could use cumulative voting. Each voter has five votes, and can cast them for up to five candidates. If a single vote goes to a single candidate, that candidate would receive five votes; votes for two separate candidates would give them each two-and-a-half votes, etc. It's intent was to imrpove the chances of minority representation on the council. A study has shown the process has not benefited the minority candidates. As the city re-districts, there is discussion as to whether to eliminate cumulative voting in favor of an alternative. Several years ago, the small town of Cuba in Fulton County was presented an opportunity to build a new school for 7th through 12th graders when land was gifted to the school district. But instead of building a school in which children could learn, leaders decided to create an opportunity for students to change the way they live. It took untold hours of study, but school board members and administrators proposed to the community an environment that surrounded the kids in a sustainable lifestyle. It is more than saving aluminum cans or creating a compost heap. It is more than students playing football on a field of soil combined with recycled rubber, watching basketball on bleachers of recycled milk jugs and walking carpeted halls made of reused fabric. Despite the photo voltaic array and geothermal wells, it is more than renewable energy systems and energy cost reduction practices. It is a chance for children to live a sustainable life rather than just learn about it. On the surface, it may seem like the life of a century ago, raising fish, caring for chickens and re-funneling rain water for their own garden. A closer look shows it is a hands-on opportunity to learn about giving back to nature and to live a sustainable lifestyle. The students have now brought that awareness home to the family, creating a community with greater awareness of how their actions impact the environment. WTVP is proud to bring you an in-depth visit with the administrators who originated the idea, the teachers who created the curriculum and the students who learned, and then spread the word of the importance of sustainability. In conjunction with Bob Wojda of Water Street Media Works and independent producer H Wayne Wilson, we are presenting The Grass Is Always Greener: Understanding Sustainability. The program is made possible in part by a grant from the Blueprint America project through WNET in New York, through a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.
