The new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a energy storage device that the MTA and the New York Power Authority partnered on last year and has been in use by all LI buses ever since. The BESS system was implemented by the MTA in order to power the natural gas compressors that all the LI buses use, to reduce energy costs, and to provide back-up power. A young woman who commutes from Brooklyn to Hempstead voices her opinion on whether she believes the MTA takes the public's input into consideration when they make their final decision on the various services cuts. She believes that the MTA does not because in the area she lives in, there are "never any buses." She also said that she knows a "couple of people who complained about but it hasn't changed."
